What "Plant and Machinery" Cover Actually Means
You'll often see excavator insurance described under the broader term plant and machinery cover. This is the accidental damage, theft, and malicious damage protection described above, it responds when something happens to your machine.
This is different from Machinery Breakdown Insurance, which covers mechanical or electrical failure, a hydraulic system giving out, an engine fault, rather than an external event like damage or theft. Many operators need both, plant and machinery cover for the "something happened to it" scenarios, and machinery breakdown for the "it just stopped working" scenarios. We can help you work out which combination actually matches your equipment and how you use it.

Claim Scenario
A Brisbane earthmoving contractor experienced a major setback when a 5-tonne excavator was stolen from a secured job site overnight, resulting in a loss of over $60,000.
At the time, the contractor’s insurance was arranged and managed by Monarch Insurance Brokers.
How the Policy Was Structured
During our initial review, we identified that the excavator was a critical income-generating asset meaning that both the value of the machine and the impact of losing it needed to be properly considered.
To address this, we structured the policy to ensure:
-
The excavator was specified individually on the policy
-
It was insured for an agreed value, reflecting its true replacement cost
-
Appropriate security conditions were in place to meet insurer requirements
-
The policy included cover for theft from job sites, not just at a fixed location
This ensured there were no gaps in cover if the equipment was stolen while in use across different sites.
How the Claim Responded
When the theft occurred, the claim was lodged promptly and supported with the necessary documentation.
Because the plant and equipment had been correctly specified and insured for the right value, the policy responded as intended, covering the loss of the excavator.
This allowed the contractor to replace the machine and return to work without suffering a long-term financial setback.
Why This Matters
Without the right structure in place, claims like this can often be reduced or declined due to:
-
Incorrect valuation
-
Unspecified equipment
-
Security requirements not being met
-
Limitations on where equipment is covered
This scenario highlights the importance of not just having insurance but having it set up correctly for how your business actually operates.
