Why Public Liability Insurance Is Important?
Quick Summary
Public Liability Insurance is one of the most common forms of business insurance in Australia and for good reason. Even a simple accident can result in costly legal proceedings, compensation claims and significant financial stress for a business owner.
Imagine a customer slipping on a wet floor at your premises, a tradie accidentally damaging a client's property while working onsite, or a contractor causing injury to a member of the public. In situations like these, your business may be held legally responsible for the resulting costs.

Common Public Liability Claims
Review the below scenarios to get familiar with potential claims for Public Liability
Examples
Property Damage Claim
An electrician was mid-renovation on a kitchen in Ashgrove, drilling into a wall to run new cabling, when the drill bit struck a water pipe concealed behind the plasterboard. Water began seeping through the wall almost immediately, and by the time it was shut off at the mains, it had soaked the flooring, damaged the plasterboard, and reached a nearby power point.
The electrician stopped work and called the client straight away, but a concealed pipe is not something a tradesperson can always anticipate, and the damage bill quickly grew to cover replacement flooring, wall repairs, and an electrical safety inspection before power could be restored.
Because the electrician held public liability insurance, the claim was handled without the cost falling on the business. The policy covered the repair costs directly, and the broker managed communication with the client and the insurer throughout, so the job, and the relationship, stayed intact.
Customer Injury Claim
A homewares store in Paddington had been trading for just under two years along Latrobe Terrace. On a wet Saturday afternoon, a customer walked in from the rain and slipped on a section of entrance floor that had gone slick from foot traffic, fracturing her wrist and bruising her hip badly enough to need months of physiotherapy.
The store owner called an ambulance and documented everything, but good intentions do not cover a fractured wrist. Her medical costs mounted quickly, and as a hairdresser unable to use her dominant hand for two months, she also had a genuine claim for lost income.
Because the store held public liability insurance, the claim was handled without the owner funding any of it herself. Medical expenses and lost income were both covered, with the broker managing the insurer directly. Without that cover, she would have faced those costs alone, plus the risk of the matter going to a solicitor.
