For most tradies, your tools aren’t just equipment. They’re your income.

You can't work without your tools and you can't make income without them to complete the work. Yet tool insurance is one of the most misunderstood covers, and one of the most common areas where claims get knocked back.

In this guide, we break down what tool insurance actually covers, what it doesn’t, and the key mistakes that can leave tradies out of pocket when it matters most.

Tools and Equipment insurance is a vital part of cover for Tradies.
Tools and Equipment insurance is a vital part of cover for Tradies.

What Tool Insurance Covers

At its core, tool insurance is designed to protect your tools against sudden and unexpected loss or damage.

Theft

This is the most common claim.

Cover can apply if your tools are stolen from:

  • Your work vehicle

  • A locked job site

  • Your home or workshop

Damage

If your tools are accidentally damaged, your policy can respond.

Examples:

  • Dropping a laser level off scaffolding

  • Water damage from an unexpected leak

  • Damage during transport between jobs

Transit Cover

Most policies will cover your tools while moving between locations.

This is critical for tradies constantly travelling between job sites.

What Tool Insurance Doesn’t Cover

This is where most people get caught out.

Unattended Vehicle Theft

If your tools are left in a vehicle and:

  • The vehicle is unlocked, or

  • There are no signs of forced entry

The claim may be denied.

Some insurers also have conditions around:

  • Time of day (e.g. overnight)

  • Whether tools were visible

  • Whether the vehicle was stored in a secure location

Wear and Tear

Insurance won’t cover tools that simply wear out over time.

Examples:

  • Old power tools failing

  • Batteries degrading

Poor Storage or Negligence

If tools are not stored securely, insurers may reject the claim.

Examples:

  • Tools left out on-site overnight

  • Tools stored in an open or unsecured area

Specified vs Unspecified Tools

This is one of the most important parts of your cover.

Unspecified Tools

  • Covered up to a total limit (e.g. $2,500 each item)

  • Individual item limits apply

Best for:

  • Smaller, everyday tools

Specified Tools

  • High-value items listed individually

  • Covered for their full value

Best for:

  • Expensive equipment (e.g. laser levels, compressors, specialised gear)

Keep a mental note for these higher value items: If it’s not listed, it may not be fully covered.

Real Claim Scenario (QLD)

A Brisbane electrician had around $12,000 worth of tools stolen from his ute overnight.

The vehicle was locked, but parked on the street.

The issue? The tools were visible through the window.

The insurer reduced the claim payout due to failure to take “reasonable precautions”.

Instead of receiving the full amount, the tradie was left several thousand dollars out of pocket.

Why Tool Insurance Claims Get Denied

From experience, most denied claims come down to a few key issues:

1. Security Conditions Not Met

  • No forced entry

  • Vehicle left unlocked

  • Tools left in plain sight

2. Tools Not Properly Declared

  • Underinsured total value

  • High-value items not specified

3. Incorrect Understanding of Cover

  • Assuming tools are covered anywhere, anytime

  • Not realising policy conditions around storage

4. Trying to Save on Premium

Choosing the cheapest policy often means:

  • Lower limits

  • More exclusions

  • Stricter conditions

How to Avoid Issues at Claim Time

A few simple steps can make all the difference:

  • Keep tools out of sight in vehicles

  • Lock your vehicle and job site properly

  • Store tools securely overnight

  • List high-value tools individually (Check with your broker)

  • Make sure your insured amount reflects the true value

Final Thoughts

Tool insurance isn’t just about having cover.

It’s about having the right cover, set up properly, so it actually responds when something goes wrong.

Because when your tools are gone, it’s not just an inconvenience.

It’s your livelihood on the line.
